Chamber Concert “In memoriam”
Programme
Information about the programme
Entitled In Memoriam, this chamber music concert brings together works that do not idealize memory but rather make it audible. Henry Purcell’s Chaconne thus unfolds with quiet solemnity out of the strict repetition of its ground bass, prompting the listener to pause and reflect. Benjamin Britten’s Second String Quartet, written to mark Purcell’s 250th birthday, combines formal clarity with a deeply personal musical language that does not simply reference memory but rather develops it further. In György Kurtág’s composition, memory is embedded in the title itself, whereby grief is condensed within a limited number of gestures – fragments and pauses, like subtle resistances against oblivion. Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 15 ultimately becomes a radical farewell – six slow movements permeated by paralysis, doubt, and bitter concentration.
