Information about the programme
A special high point awaits right at the start of the new season: Sir Simon Rattle will conduct a concert performance of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, with Malin Byström and Christian Gerhaher heading a prestigious line-up of soloists. Based on Georg Büchner’s dramatic fragment, the opera tells the story of the soldier Wozzeck, who gets broken by the world. Berg’s music penetrates the listeners’ ears in a blunt, yearning, and harrowing way utilizing a riveting sound world infused with military rhythms and lyrical tenderness. When the work premiered almost exactly 100 years ago in Berlin on 14 December 1925, Alma Mahler (to whom Berg dedicated the opera) wrote: “One trembled, as if confronted by something extraordinary.” An unforgettable masterpiece that unites atonality and emotion, and challenges as well as rewards the heart, mind, and ears.
