Information on the programme
The concert, which is part of the Watch This Space series, commences with songs accompanied by the harp. After soprano Hanna-Elisabeth Müller finishes singing, Stefan Schilli’s English horn becomes the prima donna, masterfully accompanied by harpist Magdalena Hoffmann: in the fantasy Omaggio a Bellini, based on themes from the operas Il pirata and La sonnambula, Antonio Pasculli (1842–1924) delicately evokes the highly romantic world of Bellini’s large-scale stage works. Together with cellist Frederike Jehkul-Sadler, Stefan Schilli also performs the East-West Miniatures I and II by Isang Yun (1917–1995), which, as the title suggests, interweave East Asian sounds on the oboe with Western European cantilenas on the cello. Finally, all four musicians come together to perform the Suite liturgique by André Jolivet (1905–1974), who, like Yun, has combined old Eastern and Western melodies to form a spiritual meditation occupying several interconnected movements. In addition to a Salve Regina, an Alleluia, a Magnificat, and a Benedictus, Jolivet also included a Musette influenced by the old dance form of the same name.
