After the successful Beethoven cycle, Arthaus Musik releases Giuseppe Verdi’s “Messa da requiem”, another masterpiece by Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons. Together with the excellent Bavarian Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra, he transforms the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein into a suburb of heaven. The four outstanding soloists unite to portray the full range of emotions – from quiet awe to emotional turmoil.

Giuseppe Verdi: Messa da Requiem

Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova has been closely associated with the Vienna State Opera for a number of years, while mezzo-soprano Marina Prudenskaja has built her international career step by step, with one important role after another. Tenor Saimir Pirgu from Albania was entrusted by Claudio Abbado with Mozart’s role of Ferrando in “Cosi fan tutte” at the age of just 22. Bulgarian bass Orlin Anastassov, meanwhile, has made a name for himself as a first-rate Verdi singer. Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” itself is a work of superlatives: a mighty texture of thundering brass, massive chorale masses and tour-de-force passages for the four soloists… a mass for the dead without sentimental undertones… probably the most outstanding achievement of 19th century church music.
