For the intense, five-hour musical journey through Richard Wagner’s “Siegfried”, the conductor, the outstanding singers and the BRSO received standing ovations for minutes after each act.

On 8 November 2019, a few weeks before his unexpected death, Mariss Jansons conducted his last concert during a tour with the BRSO at Carnegie Hall in New York. The programme included the four symphonic interludes from Richard Strauss’ opera “Intermezzo” as well as the fourth symphony by Johannes Brahms.

On his last tour with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons rehearsed the 4th Symphony by Johannes Brahms. We did not publish this video from the Vienna Musikverein during his lifetime because it shows an already weakened Mariss Jansons. But it also shows the Mariss Jansons who had the unconditional will to work with “his” orchestra to the end, to shape the music. He lived for and through the music.

“For me as a conductor, it’s like driving a Rolls-Royce. This orchestra can simply do everything,” says principal conductor Mariss Jansons about the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. To make the most of the acoustics in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, he brought along a symphonic heavyweight in the form of Richard Strauss’s “Also sprach Zarathustra”. Also on the programme of the concert on 13 January 2018: Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, op. 100.

The programme included Anton Bruckner’s 8th Symphony, in which Wagner tubas are used.
