Impressions from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg
In February 2023, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle was a guest at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, among other venues. For the intense, five-hour musical journey through Richard Wagner’s “Siegfried”, the conductor, the outstanding singers and the BRSO received standing ovations for minutes after each act.

With Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Beatrice Rana, the BRSO went on a European tour in May 2022 with a total of 6 concerts in 7 days. The stops were: Vienna, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Luxembourg and Paris. In the video you can see an excerpt of the work “Ein Heldenleben” by Richard Strauss.

Mariss Jansons – His last concert – 8 November 2019 in New York
Johannes Brahms: 4th Symphony
On 8 November 2019, a few weeks before his unexpected death, Mariss Jansons conducted his last concert during a tour with the BRSO at Carnegie Hall in New York. The programme included the four symphonic interludes from Richard Strauss’ opera “Intermezzo” as well as the fourth symphony by Johannes Brahms.

On his last tour with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons rehearsed the 4th Symphony by Johannes Brahms. We did not publish this video from the Vienna Musikverein during his lifetime because it shows an already weakened Mariss Jansons. But it also shows the Mariss Jansons who had the unconditional will to work with “his” orchestra to the end, to shape the music. He lived for and through the music.

Asian tour in November 2018 with Zubin Mehta
Franz Schubert: “Rosamunde” Overture D 797
On the approximately two-week tour through Asia with a total of 11 concerts, the programme included works by Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt, Igor Stravinsky and Richard Strauss. In the concert at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Zubin Mehta conducted Franz Schubert’s “Rosamunde” Overture D 797, which you can watch in the video.
Northeast European Tour with Mariss Jansons in May 2018
Impressions from Riga, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg and Moscow
Riga, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg and Moscow were the stops on the tour in May 2018. The programme included “La valse” by Maurice Ravel and the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev with Frank Peter Zimmermann. A review of the tour is available in the video!
With Mariss Jansons at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

“For me as a conductor, it’s like driving a Rolls-Royce. This orchestra can simply do everything,” says principal conductor Mariss Jansons about the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. To make the most of the acoustics in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, he brought along a symphonic heavyweight in the form of Richard Strauss’s “Also sprach Zarathustra”. Also on the programme of the concert on 13 January 2018: Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, op. 100.

What are Wagner tubas?
In November 2017, Mariss Jansons and Yefim Bronfman went on a European tour with stops in Lugano, Luxembourg, Brussels, London, Vienna and Milan. The programme included Anton Bruckner’s 8th Symphony, in which Wagner tubas are used. Ursula Kepser and Norbert Dausacker explain in the video what the Wagner tubas have to do with Wagner and what they have to do with the tuba.
